Dr Ignacio Correa-Velez

For this episode, I’m very happy to have Dr Ignacio Correa-Velez with us. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Public Health and Social Work at Qeensland University of Technology (QUT), and co-CEO of the Queensland Program of Assistance to Survivors of Torture and Trauma (QPASTT). For the last 20 years, his work has focused on addressing the social and environmental determinants of health among people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds through teaching, research, evaluation of programs and services, and advocacy.

Stephanie Long

For this episode, I have Stephanie or Steph with me. Steph is a Mental Health Accredited Social Worker who has been working in Brisbane with people seeking asylum and people from refugee background for the past 9 years. Steph has a Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work with research focus on vicarious trauma. Alongside provision of trauma recovery interventions, she has a particular interest in supporting front line workers who assist trauma survivors to have productive, dignified and healthy lives. Prior to working in the trauma sector, Steph was an environmental justice activist and advocate with a national and international focus. Across all areas of her professional experience, is a commitment to social justice, equity and compassion. Outside of working in a refugee trauma recovery service, Steph teaches yoga and provides professional supervision support for social workers and activists.

Merry

For this episode, I have my friend Merry joining us. She is a graduate accountant who is currently doing temp work and teaching herself the Kalimba, which is a traditional music instrument from Zimbabwe. She is passionate about advocating for minority groups like queer people of colour and for equal mental health access regardless of visa status. When not in existential dread, she also volunteers and plays board games.
